Origins

A German colony by the lake

San Bernardino was founded on 24 August 1881 by German and Swiss immigrants, amid Paraguay’s repopulation policies after the Triple Alliance War. The colony was named in honor of President General Bernardino Caballero.

Among figures tied to the colony’s early administration is Swiss-German Santiago (Otto) Schaerer. The town first grew as an agricultural settlement and, still in the 19th century, became a summer retreat for Asunción’s elite.

The lake and the name Ypacaraí

Ypacaraí is a natural tectonic lake — not an artificial reservoir. San Bernardino grew on its eastern shore and the lake shaped the city’s identity as a summer destination.

In Guaraní, “Ypacaraí” is often translated as “blessed water/lake” (ypa + karaí). Folk etymologies also exist (“¿ypa karaí?” — “is it the water, sir?”). Tradition links the blessing of the waters to Fray Luis de Bolaños: oral lore, not an administrative record.

Important: the lake is not suitable for bathing

MADES has reiterated that the waters do not meet bathing standards. The shore, viewpoints and historic heritage remain the heart of a visit.
