Assessing a home
Visit by day and at night; check lighting, traffic, access, mobile coverage and actual distance to services. Ask about physical security and do not treat private guards as a guarantee against crime.

Everyday preparation
Lock homes and vehicles, keep valuables out of sight, exchange contacts with neighbours and share night travel plans. Peak season brings more traffic and transport demand, so arrange the return journey first.
Call 911 for police emergencies and 141 for SEME medical emergencies. Volunteer firefighters publish 132; the Police directory also lists 131 for its Fire Brigade.
